A dialogue by Plato is named after him. He attended lessons from the sophist Gorgias. As Xenophon mentions in the work of Cyrus Anavasis, he participated in Cyrus' campaign against the king of Persia, as one of the five generals who led Cyrus's Greek mercenary army. After the battle at Kounaxa, where Cyrus was killed, the Persian satrap Tissaphernis sent him to the king, who put him to death after torturing him for a year (Xenophon, Cyrus Anavasis, B, 6, 29).
