Great Greek poet, father of didactic epic. He was born in Askra in Boeotia, therefore he is called Askraios. With Hesiod, Greece of the eighth and seventh centuries BC emerges from the darkness of myth and begins to be illuminated historically. Cultivator of land under Helicon, he sang between plowing and resting, and recited his odes at gatherings and festivals, giving advice and instructions to farmers and merchants on the cultivation of the fields. He had transferred this knowledge from the more advanced Ionia, from which his merchant father emigrated after he went bankrupt.

Hesiod is the first poet who was interested in the life of ordinary people and the one who opened the way of earthly reality and peaceful work to the ancient bucolic people. According to Aristotle, he died at Askra, when the polychne was destroyed by the Thespians, and the inhabitants had fled to Orchomenos. The Orchomenians searched for the bones of the poet of the epic "Works and Days", took them to Orchomenos and buried them in the center of their market, next to the tomb of their local hero Minya. Hesiod is translated into all the languages of the world.
