One of the Seven Sages of antiquity, son of Damagetos, who lived in the sixth century BC. In 566 he was prefect, to increase the power of this office. Perhaps the two famous quotes "Know thyself" and "No excess", which were carved on the wall of the temple of Apollo in Delphi, are due to him. Tradition says that he died of joy when he embraced his son Olympianis. Few of his quotations survived, and a small collection saw the light only at the beginning of the last century.
