CRATES OF ATHENS

Athens, 3rd century B.C.

Son of Antigenes, Thriasian as to the municipality. He was a student of Polemons, whom he succeeded as a scholar of the Academy (270-265 BC). When he died, in 265 BC he was buried in the same tomb as Polemon. Although he did not engage in politics, he was asked by the Athenians to go as ambassador to Demetrius the Besieger and Pyrrhus. His Litigations and Ambassadorial speeches are mentioned in these missions . He also authored the works On Comedy and Philosophizing , which have survived in fragments.
